Our Clap Sticks are all unique and hand painted by Aboriginal artist Jenny of the Budjari people. There are variations in each set which adds to their charm and authenticity.

Jenny’s passion for Aboriginal art is reflected in all her work and each stick tells a cultural story from her heart.

The history of clapsticks for Australian First Nations people is as follows:

The origin of clapsticks is unknown, but they have been used for at least one thousand years.

Depictions of clapsticks appear in rock paintings, but their dating is speculative.

Clapsticks are a traditional percussion instrument used to maintain rhythm in voice chants, often as part of an Aboriginal ceremony. They are also played during social dancing and can accompany other instruments.

Decorative designs are painted onto the sticks.

Clapsticks are also known as bilma, bimli, clappers, music-stick or just stick.

  • Other uses

Like many Indigenous objects, clapsticks can serve more than one purpose, such as for digging in the earth, or as trade items.
